"The Church Can End World Hunger Today!"According to The Barna Group, frequently cited by the church, In the United States alone, real estate owned by institutional churches today is worth over $230 billion. Church building debt, service, and maintenance consumes about 18 percent of the $50 to $60 billion tithed to churches annually. (see "Pagan Christianity" page 41) Then, according to the LA Times, The United Nations estimates that it would take at least $30 billion per year to solve the food crisis.... Over the decade that it would take to make sustainable improvements in the lives of the 862 million undernourished people, that [only] amounts to $300 billion. In other words, the church has actually been empowered by God to end world hunger, but instead it has decided to use that power and wealth to have the comforts of separate buildings and salaries. When little more than 50% of "the church's" income, in a single nation, can sustainably end world hunger... how will the church justify this to the Lord, who had no place to lay His own head and told us to follow Him? It is not only within our reach, it is our obligation to feed the hungry, whether anyone thinks they deserve it or not. The Lord is not calling us to occupy a building, but to occupy the world. He does not desire that we occupy a pew, but that He occupy our hearts. He desires that we open our hand wide to the poor, working to eradicate poverty.
